Ah, Nostalgia!
I remember watching my brother play the first Kingdom Hearts at a young age. My sister and I were enchanted by the graphics and the story that mixed in angst-filled teenagers and Disney characters. It starts with a trio of friends spending the last of their summer days together which brought nostalgia and romance to a video game like I’d never seen before.
Now, maybe I’ve become more cynical in my old age but I have lost that feeling. Don’t get me wrong, I still hold a special place in my heart (pun intended) for this game but it has so many illogical narratives.
Questionable Storytelling
This game is absolutely beautiful to look at but ambiguous from the start. Our characters talk about simple subjects like light/dark and heart/heartless but as time moves forward we meet more characters within the Disney Worlds, Organization XIII and members from the Keyblade Wars that seem to fade in and out of our journey. I’m still trying to process all of these plot lines and their components!
This game is about Sora who is on an adventure with Donald and Goofy to defeat darkness and bring light to the worlds. The Disney Worlds are invaded with heartless which allows Sora to fight with his keyblade and tease Donald along the way. Thankfully Goofy is following along with this story because he’s able to explain plot points to Sora and the audience! “BOIL!” – Goofy
Inverse to the Rescue
These games are too beautiful and nostalgic for me to give up but I’m gritting my teeth as I play. If a game cannot make sense of its story it might want to reconsider its voice.
I found a video from Paul Ramsdale at Inverse who explores the ‘Kingdom Hearts 3′ Plot Explained: Here’s How the Story Got So Confusing’. I appreciate his honesty and explanation for the game! It helped me better understand the people who created it and their methods.
The truth is we’re all so quick to judge someone for their work but I’d like to applaud them for their efforts and originality as well.
